Freedom Fast

Will you join me? One day? July 4th.

Will you fast from sun up to sundown, with a pure heart for the Lord to move in this country?

The video isn’t perfect, but it conveys the message. I believe we need a nation-wide fast. What better day than on the day we claim to celebrate freedom. I’m continually reminded of these words:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

What if we fast so that one day these words that were penned in our Declaration of Independence would actually be true for all men?

What if we continued to fast until it was truly a reality?

I know it’s a lot. A huge sacrifice, but I believe that’s the point.

Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:14-15

I’m reminded of Esther and her people when Haman wanted to kill Mordecai and all the Jews. He actually sought permission from the king to do this. If you look at history, there are multiple accounts of intentions to kill and lessen the number of black people on this earth. When Mordecai heard of this plan, he told Queen Esther. Not knowing what to do, Esther gathered all the Jews to fast for her so that she could appear before the king and fight on their behalf.  After fasting, she went to the King and asked for a decree that would reverse what was allowed to happen to the Jews. When I consider the deaths that have happened at the hands of police officers, I believe we need a decree–a law–like Esther did for her people. There are laws that protect cops, but there should be laws that protect citizens from evil and unjust acts committed by them. Notice, the new decree didn’t stop people from hating the Jews. A law in itself cannot do that. However, it did prevent their hatred from being experienced or legal. Let us seek the Lord together on how we can change and heal our nation.

July 4th Prayers

  • Our young people would not be taught to perpetuate the biases, stereotypes, prejudices, and racism of this world so that they will live in a better generation.

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

  • Those with blinders on will have a Paul change that where they once stood on the opposing side, supporting the traditions they learned and grew up with, would now, by God’s grace, shine the light in those areas and be advocates for truth, grace, equality, and justice.

They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me. Galatians 1:23-24

  • No one would sit back silently in the midst of wrong, racism, and injustice, but oppose those in the open like Paul.

When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.  The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs? Galatians 2:11-14

  • Rise up against and expose institutions and corporations that knowingly or unknowingly participate in systemic racism.

For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.  Luke 8:17

  • Conviction and repentance for how we’ve personally knowingly or unknowingly aided in systemic racism

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.

Psalm 51:3-4

  • Wisdom to those in leadership

Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:8-9

  • Healing and solution from COVID

 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. James 5:14-15

  • United understanding of what freedom is for everyone

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

  • Laws that would protect citizens from unjust killings by police.

The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children,[b] and to plunder the property of their enemies. Esther 8:11

  • Change the hearts of people to have your heart, love, and understanding.

In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water
    that he channels toward all who please him. Proverbs 21:1

  • Church to speak up and act against injustices.

Speak up and judge fairly;
    defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:9

  • Individuals to be the pillars of anti-racism within their perspective circles and areas where only they can speak despite the backlash, persecution, and hurt.

Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:37-39

  • To spread and share God’s truth and love more than ever.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

  • We would truly love our neighbor as ourselves

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40
